Transcript: video content as text
00:01 This video will describe how you register for Paratext 8 [and Paratext 9]
00:05 You register for Paratext online so make sure that your Internet connection is set up, and then you start your web browser.
00:15 In your browser address bar you type “registry.paratext.org”.
00:27 The first thing the form requires is for you to create a sign in with your email address.
00:33 Type that in the email address line.
00:36 If a rainbow colored ‘G’ appears when you type in your email address,
00:39 this shows that the Paratext registry server has detected that your email account is based on a Google server, which is true of many of us.
00:47 If your account is not based on Google you won’t see a rainbow colored ‘G’.
00:52 There is a process that you can sign in to the registry account that we’ll show you a bit later.
00:57 But if you have a Google account you proceed like this.
00:59 You click the wedge to sign in. Your browser will ask you to sign in to your Google account if you haven’t yet,
01:06 then Google asks if you want to let the Paratext registry have access to your basic profile info.
01:13 Click the ‘Allow’ button to permit this.
01:23 Now you’ve signed in to the registration server and can start filling in the registration information.
01:27 Let’s step back and show how you sign in if you don’t have a Google account.
01:31 At the sign in form, you go ahead and put in your email address.
01:34 There won’t be a rainbow colored ‘G’ that appears.
01:41 You click the box that says “I don’t want to use a Google account”
01:43 then you enter a password to sign in to the registry server.
01:45 This is a new password that you make for this account,
01:51 and you’ll have to type it twice to confirm that you typed right without unknowingly making a mistake.
02:02 Then the registry server will ask you to check your email for a message that will enable you to confirm your email address.
02:09 Go to your email, you should see a message from Paratext Registry.
02:14 When you open it, you should see a long code in a link you click to confirm the email address.
02:21 Now whether you signed in with Google or didn’t sign in with Google, filling in the registration form should be the same.
02:28 The first thing it wants to know is if you have had a previous Paratext registration.
02:32 Choose the one that applies to you:
02:35 I’ve never had a Paratext registration,
02:38 if you have had a previous Paratext 8 registration,
02:42 or if you had a previous Paratext 7 registration.
02:46 The registry server will guess your first and last name from your email address,
02:51 if that is not right you can type the right one in, otherwise you can go on.
02:56 Next the form asks for your organization. This item is a long list of organizations, you go looking for the one you are a member of.
03:06 Select a local organization if you have one rather than a regional or global organization.
03:12 If your organization is not in this list, you can’t just add it in.
03:17 You’ll have to leave it blank, and in our next video we will describe how to apply for recognition of your organization.
03:24 Remember, anybody can use Paratext whether they are a member of an organization or not.
03:29 But members of a recognized organization will be able to use all the features of Paratext.
03:35 Then you select your country from the list of countries.
03:39 You can quickly find the country by typing a few letters of the name.
03:43 If it applies to you, fill in the Field unit or entity, and your supervisor’s name part of the form.
03:50 This may help your organization validate your request faster.
03:54 But if it does not apply to you, you can leave these blank.
03:59 Type in your reason for using Paratext, such as the translation project you are a part of.
04:11 Lastly, you choose whether or not you want to receive occasional email updates from Paratext.
04:18 This is up to you, but we recommend that you leave this box checked.
04:22 To submit your request, click the green ‘Register’ button.
04:26 This sends your request to the registration server.
04:31 If you specified an organization, the server will probably tell you you have to wait for your organizational affiliation to be validated.
04:40 You can click on the blue link if you would like immediate access to Paratext,
04:46 but if that is not necessary, you can just wait for your organizational validation and your final Paratext code to come in an email.
04:56 When you get the email with your Paratext registration code, you can select the code,
05:01 right there in your message.
05:04 and then press Ctrl-C to copy the code to the Windows clipboard.
05:11 Now when you start Paratext the registration information form should come up,
05:16 and it should automatically read the code you pasted into the Windows clipboard and paste it in.
05:22 You just need to fill in your registration name and your email address.
05:31 If your organization has someone who provides Paratext support to you, you can enter their name here in the Paratext supporter name box.
05:38 This way if you have a problem with Paratext, Paratext can notify them of the issue,
05:42 When you have finished filling in the registration information, click the OK button.
05:49 If when you have filled out the registration, the OK button stays gray and won’t let you click it,
05:54 the most likely reason is you’ve made a mistake typing in the registration name or registration code.
06:00 Double check with your email if you are using the right name and the right code.
06:08 The last thing Paratext asks you before it starts for the first time is whether you want to allow normal Internet use.
06:14 Unless you have some special reason, you probably want to allow this.
06:18 If you are used to using Paratext 7 where you don’t have the Internet connection turned on except when you want to send and receive,
06:25 you can still work the same
way in Paratext 8.
06:30 Now your Paratext should be registered and installed and ready for you to get to work.
1. Sign in using an email address
To sign in to the Registry website, you must provide a valid email address.
The Paratext Registry will let you sign in with any valid email address. When you type in your address, if a G appears to the left of your address, you don’t need a separate password. You can simply sign in to your existing Google account to log in to the registry. For all other addresses, you have to create a password, and then confirm your email address by clicking YES in the link that you receive by email.
Paratext 7 users: You do NOT need to use the same email address that you registered with in Paratext 7.
No email address? The administrator of a translation organization can add you to the Registry directly and send you a registration code. You will be able to use Paratext, participate in projects and use resources, but you will not be able to register projects of your own. If you do get an email address later, you can follow the above steps at a later date and claim your Paratext identity using your Paratext registration code. This will enable you to register projects.
2. Register as a Paratext User
Once you are signed in, you must fill out the New Paratext User registration form. Be sure to choose your organization (if your organization is not listed, leave it blank). Your request must be approved by the organization and this process shouldn’t take too long. If you need to get started sooner, you can following the cues on-screen to receive a temporary code.
Paratext 7 users: You will need to have your old code. Your registration name will remain unchanged, but you will be issued a new code.
